Hidden Costs to Consider When Budgeting For You Next Overseas Holiday

The euphoria you feel when purchasing flights and accommodation for your dream adventure can quickly wear off once you realize there’s other costs that require you to dip into your hip pocket. While we all wish that these holiday expenses would stop at these key factors, numerous hidden costs can’t help but get in the way and often catch travellers off-guard. Making sure you are aware of these expenditures and allowing enough money to cover them is crucial to ensuring a stress-free and fun filled holiday. Here are a few factors you should work into your budget when planning your overseas trip.

Household Bills Don’t Disappear

I know, I know, the boring household costs don’t magically get paid by the bill fairy while you’re gallivanting around Paris! Unless you happen to win Lotto overnight, this likely isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Set aside some money to either pay your bills before you go or while you’re on the road. This could be anything from rent/mortgage, phone and internet, electricity, gas, car payment and this list goes on and on – unfortunately.

The Wrong Kind of Insurance Can Cost You

Insurance companies have an uncanny way of making you pay for benefits that aren’t applicable to you. If you are not happy with one insurance company, don’t be scared to get a second opinion of research into the best plan for you. Travel Money Oz is one of the few companies that can cater an insurance deal that’s suitable for your trip.

Pesky International Roaming Charges

Extortionist international roaming charges are the bane of a traveller’s existence. While it’s only natural to call home and check on the pets and family while you’re overseas, a five minute conversation could end up costing you $50 on top of your regular mobile plan. Lucky for you there are ways to get around these pesky costs. Wi-Fi hotspots will enable you to use Skype Call and travel SIM cards will allow you to call other countries at a discounted rate.

Paying a Visit to a Tourist Spot?

Planning on fitting in as many tourist attractions as possible? Allow some space in your budget as some of these spots don’t come cheap. If you already know which landmarks you’d like to visit, check online to see if there are pre-booking facilities to score a better deal and guarantee your place if there is a daily admittance allowance.

Are You Up To Date With Exchange Rates?

The insecure economy means our exchange rates will vary day to day. It’s crucial to keep track of the exchange market including any future predictions as this will affect the amount of spending money you have overseas. Pick the best time and convert some cash before the rates are no longer in your favour.

Withdrawal Fees Still Exist In Other Countries

Be wary of using ATM’s to withdraw cash in other countries; a single transaction can cost a holidaymaker up to $5 – talk about buzz-kill. There’s no getting around using cash on your break, but try to limit your transactions when possible by using a prepaid travel money card. You can organize one of these nifty devices from your local bank.
